Early Day Motion - Veterans in the Criminal Justice System

Elfyn Llwyd MP has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) about Veterans in the Criminal Justice System:

Early Day Motion

EDM 389

VETERANS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

01.07.2010

Llwyd, Elfyn

That this House notes that successive surveys conducted since 2000 have revealed that there were thousands of former armed forces personnel either under the supervision of the Probation Service, on parole or in prison; commends some of the innovative practices to deal with this problem developed by frontline staff within the criminal justice sector; recommends the Veterans in the Criminal Justice System: Coordinated National Action Plan developed by unions representing staff in the criminal justice system, voluntary organisations, hon. Members and Peers; and therefore calls on the Government to adopt a national strategy to ensure that counselling and advice facilities are available during and immediately after service to minimise the chances of individuals entering the criminal justice system, and that help and advice is available for those who do enter the criminal justice system to avoid reoffending.

All current UK service personnel of any rank are eligible to join and, as BAFF is not a political organisation, to take an active part in its activities if they wish. Former regular or reserve forces personnel are also very welcome.
