Troubles Bill amendments to be published shortly

The Northern Ireland Secretary has told The Independent that the Government's promised amendments to the controversial Troubles Bill will be brought to parliament on Monday (12 October 2026). The amendments will then be debated by the 'Committee of the Whole House' in the Commons Chamber on Monday, 19 October. UPDATE: The amendments have now been published ; see our first comments at Northern Ireland Troubles Bill - Government improves safeguards for veterans but how effective are they?

BAFF understands that this will involve publication by laying the amendments before parliament. MPs on all sides will require time to consider the amendments ahead of debate.

Sir Chris Bryant has been in post as Northern Ireland Secretary for about four months. He told The Independent that a “big package of amendments” would answer “every one of the key questions that people have asked us for”.

“We’re trying to make sure it is a fair process for everybody,” he added;

“What we are going to say in the bill is that there is no equivalence between the lawful action of brave British security forces and the deliberate acts of terrorists.”
